The Rules of Etiquette for Your Office Holiday Party

The Rules of Etiquette for Your Office Holiday PartyThe Rules of Etiquette for Your Office Holiday Party The holidays are a harbinger of good cheer. Holiday office parties, on the other hand, are notorious for transforming mild-mannered accountants and meek managers into booze-fueled anlass minions with all the sound and fury of a Disney Christmas parade gone wrong. Want to avoid cringe-worthy moments at your next holiday party? Youll need to brush up on the finer points of workplace wisdom and time-honored etiquette to ensure the conversations you have at work in the days following your party arent one long twinkle-light string of Im sorrys and I dont know what I was thinking. Experts across the board are united in their opinions about several aspects of office parties, attire included. Lisa M. Grotts , a San Francisco-based etiquette expert, says your holiday party isnt your chance to go overboard with gaudy outfits. Just because an office function is after wor k hours doesnt mean its an invitation to dress flashy or wear a revealing outfit, Grotts said. Skirts should hit your knee and nothing should be too tight. Skip the cleavage-bearing tops. We heard the same sentiment from Jacquelyn Youst , a Pennsylvania-based etiquette consultant . Office holiday parties are an extension of the office. This is not the time or place to wear your short skirt and low-cut blouse, Youst said. Maintain a professional level of decorum. This isnt your chance push your Im casual so I dress casual agenda, says Laura Handrick, an HR analyst at Fit Small geschftlicher umgang . This is a time for your co-workers to see how you look all cleaned up, Handrick said. If youre a plumber, like my husband, wear non-work slacks and iron them. Wear a shirt with a collar, more like youre heading to a golf club than a BBQ. Worried about whether youll be under- or over-dressed? Read the invitation, ask your coworkers what theyre wearing and go from there, says New York Ti mes best-selling workplace author Joseph Grenny . Ask around to find out what others are wearing. The invitation may suggest the attire, but you never know how the suggestion will be translated, Grenny said. Check with your co-workers, then dress slightly above average. This is the section youve probably been waiting for all the good horror stories are usually the handiwork of booze and beer. As humorous as these stories can be, jobs and reputations are on the line when youre four Sazeracs deep and ready to air your grievances. Carlota Zimmerman , a career expert based in Los Angeles, says you can give yourself a head start by eating before you arrive. Even half a sandwich and a protein smoothie will work, Zimmerman said. Just get something inside you so that the first martini wont have you self-righteously glaring at your boss as you mentally assemble your declaration of independence. Many of the experts we talked with agree keep yourself to two drinks. Two drinks are acce ptable, no more, Youst said. This ensures that you remain in control and do not do or say anything you will regret. While fruchtwein of us are able to handle two drinks - beer, especially - Zimmerman says people will take notice if you make frequent trips to the watering hole. Dont presume that your colleagues and managers wont notice if you make six trips to the bar, even if you can hold your booze like a statue, she said. Stop after two and drink water. The next day you want people to remember you for how charming you were , not your ability to hold 15 gin and tonics.Handrick had the best summary of the two-drink limit One drink makes you fun, two drinks make you silly and three drinks make you stupid.Office holiday parties require conversational skills - introvert or not, youre probably going to be forced to talk with someone you dont know that well. The rules for conversation are essentially the same as drinking moderation wins. Dont get too deep and dont come off as too su perficial. Appropriate conversation is any compliment related to the holiday outfit others have chosen or any topic related to the holidays, family time or time off, Handrick said. Will you get to see your mom this Christmas in upstate New York? is fine. As far as mentalities go, look at this as less of a required social event and more of a chance to get to know your coworkers better, even if the conversations are kept light. Use the office holiday party to connect with colleagues and build working relationships, Youst said. Keep conversation about vacation travels, childrens achievements, etc. Be mindful not to get too personal or discuss divorces or health problems. And what about that clan of boozy bros in the corner engaging in utterly impolite conversation? Greg Jenkins, a partner at Long Beachs Bravo Productions , says stay away. Refrain from any off-color remarks, even if others engage in risqu dialogue or indecent statements, Jenkins said. And avoid conversations that are political or religious, as well as those that get into gossip.Once youve had your chance to have a couple of drinks and engage in conversation, you may be ready to head home or to another party. If the second party is better than the first, dont mention that to your colleagues, Grenny said. And if youre worried about leaving too early, gauge the atmosphere. When it comes to leaving, take your cue from the majority, he said. Leave when most people are leaving.Whether you loved your holiday party or hated it, many of our experts said that expressing your gratitude about the party is a professional and polite way to acknowledge the time and money they put into the party. Amber Hunter, an employee experience director at A Plus Benefits , said that you can leave a lasting impression on your bosses if you let them know you enjoyed yourself and appreciated the companys efforts to plan a holiday party. Send a quick email or thank-you notenzeichen to your company leaders after the party , Hunter said. It will go a long way. J.R. It welches my first exposure to the consulting profession, and it was a perfect match for someone with my academic record, communication and leadership skills, and drive to succeed.I have shown initiative, creativity in problem-solving, and a commitment to building consensus and excellence throughout our college community during the last four years. As an intern in the Office of the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education, I worked with the Senior Advising team to provide accurate, effective and concise statistical and anecdotal data to a variety of constituents to support legislative proposals.I combined the written and oral skills I have gained fro m courses in American Studies and Government with quantitative and analytical training in a high-intensity environment. As Vice President of Academic Affairs for the Student Government Association and a student representative on several college committees (including the one which nominated the sixth President of State University), I have learnedto use language precisely and effectivelyto articulate myself to a range of audiencesthe value of integrity and persistence in working toward short- and long-term personal and institutional goalsThe opportunity to effect positive change for a range of institutions is the most attractive aspect of consulting for me. Why you Must Personalize Your Applications

Why you Must Personalize Your Applications Why you Must Personalize Your Applications I just posted a small web design job on getafreelancer.com. Not surprisingly, given the state of the economy, we have been inundated with responses far more than we got the last time I posted something like this. I just spent an hour skimming through them and of the 30 bids I reviewed, ONLY ONE was in any way partiealized. Only one person showed any signs of having read my brief and looked at the attached files.Im looking for a design only (no coding) and I specifically said this in my posting. Yet several people have sent me links to look at their previous coding projects. The others have sent me links to work samples that bear no relation to what Im looking for.Their emails to me include things like we have 5 years of experience coding large scale websites. Great If I ever need to code a large website, Ill know just who to call But right now, I need a web designer to create a Photoshop file for m e JUST LIKE I DESCRIBED IN MY ADThis is exactly what its like to wade through job applications. Its almost always as though no one even read your ad. You search and search for that resume or cover letter or e-mail introduction that screams I know just what you need and I can help but you rarely see it.Thats where you can set yourself apart. Please, please, please make koranvers your cover letter or email introduction specifically addresses the needs of the employer and edit your resume to address the requirements in the job posting. If they say experience in new channel development is the most important requirement for a sales person, make sure your 5 years of doing that is highly visible. You can guess which designer Im hiring.

How I saved money for my wedding while buying a house

How I saved money for my wedding while buying a houseHow I saved money for my wedding while buying a houseIf youve been following me at all in the past year, you know Ive been going through a lot of changes. I got engaged, I bought a house, and I quit my day job. These are all very financially risky and stressful changes to make, especially all at once But I also wasnt willing to give up or substantially delay any of these big changes. I wanted to buy a house before quitting my job so that we werent given a hard time by the mortgage lender. I also couldnt imagine going into 2018 still employed at my day job. And I didnt want to put off getting married beyond 2018 (I turned 30 last year and suddenly felt like there wasnt a ton of time to spare). All of these changes are pretty expensive, so we had to be pretty strategic to afford them all. This is especially true when it came to saving for ur wedding. Weddings are expensive and we had a specific dream in mind for ours. It ended up bein g a lot mora expensive than I expected, but we made it work and have saved the full amount months ahead of the wedding. Heres how we did itI saved over 10% of a windfallIn July 2017, I received a large sum of money as a settlement from the Department of Health and Human Services. In December 2015, I got a routine flu shot at CVS so that I wouldnt risk giving the flu to my then-newborn nephew over Christmas. Within an hour, my shoulder hurt so badly that I couldnt lift my arm. I had never gotten the flu shot before, so I figured it was a normal reaction to the shot. Well, I was wrong. I could barely lift my left arm for six months. Dan had to help me get dressed and even take off my jacket. It took over a year, an MRI and CT scan, and many doctors telling me I was crazy, but eventually, I received a settlement from the government for my injury.I immediately put over 10% of that settlement into a savings account earmarked for our future wedding. If you had any doubts about my knack fo r planning ahead, you should know that we werent even engaged yet at this time. But I put this large sum of money aside and that made it so that we had nearly half of what we would ultimately need for the wedding. I recommend this approach if you everreceive a windfallin the future.I saved 20% of my take-home payFor the last four months of my time at my day job, I saved about 20% of my take-home pay for the wedding. That amounted to about $700 a month, so by the time I left the job at the end of December, I had saved $2,100 for the wedding from my paycheck.I think this is one of the best ways to save up a lot of money over time, if you have the money to spare. Set up direct deposit from your paychecks and save a percentage each month. You can do this for any goal, whether its building up your emergency savings account or saving up for a trip.We saved our tax refeststellungsSince Dan and I were both fully employed in 2017, we both received tax refunds in April. 2017 was the last year that we could meaningfully write off the interest on our mortgage payments and real estate taxes. We also wrote off the start-up costs we incurred for getting our Airbnb up to snuff. These write-offs helped increase our tax refund. We put those refunds directly into our wedding fund. Are you wondering what you should do with your tax refund?Heres what I thinkI saved all my business incomeFor the first four months of 2018, I saved all of my business profit and put it directly into our wedding savings account. As Im getting my business off the ground and building profit, Dan and I are living off of his paycheck completely. All of my take-home pay from my business is going directly into savings. The first priority this year was obviously the wedding. By April, we had reached our savings goal for the wedding. Since then, Ive been putting the money into our home improvement fund.Dan saved his freelance incomeDan is an interactive graphic designer, so he often designs and builds websites (likemine). Earlier this year, he built the website for the new DC cidery,Capitol Cider House. He put that freelance income directly into our savings account (after setting aside 30% for taxes, of course). In the future, we will likely put his freelance income towards our dog fund and our home improvement projects. This article was originally published on MaggieGermano.com.MaggieGermanois a feminist and financial coach for women. 10 Ways GDPR Will Affect Engineers Part Two

10 Ways GDPR Will Affect Engineers Part Two 10 Ways GDPR Will Affect Engineers Part Two 10 Ways GDPR Will Affect Engineers, Part 2Part 1 looked at some the challenges GDPR poses to engineering and manufacturing companies that design and produce smart devices. This part of the story takes a closer look the impact GDPR has on the Internet of Things, smart cities, and security.4) Smart Devices Might Have to Be Less SmartSmart devices, especially those used in the home, could amass huge amounts of personal data without identifying individuals. But the data could make an individual almost identifiable or build a comprehensive picture of what a persons home life is like. The key challenge with this will be assessing the extent to which this information is personal data and then ensuring that the appropriate safeguards are in place in relation to it, the lawyers say.University of Edinburgh is one of 14 universities in UK selected to lead cyber security research. Image University of Edinburgh When making hardware and software changes in engineering projects, ask these questions Is the personal data kept secure? How can you provide transparent information to individuals? What is the personal data being used for and do you have a legal basis for each use? These are all questions GDPR requires organizations to ask and answer when personal data is collected. For You How Industry 4.0 Impacts Engineering Design5) Plugging Security Holes, Especially in IoTMultiple security steps need to be taken to mitigate risk, especially with IoT systems deployed in critical infrastructure and industrial systems. Security assessments need to be conducted, and its important to understand who is responsible for managing risks in automation and IoT.Given the poor state of IoT security, if data breaches occur, worker personal data could also be implicated. The quick data breach notification requirements in GDPR to report within 72 hours to authorities may pose practical strains for assessing the scale, nature and impact of breaches for distributed, interdependent systems, says the University of Ediburghs Lachlan Urquhart, a lecturer in technology law.Risk can be mitigated by managing data (often user information) effectively across supply chains and manufactured products. Also, budget to patch and manage legacy IoT systems and networks of devices like PLCs that may be vulnerable to hacks.6) Smart City ChallengesIoT is key in smart cities, but GDPR challenges could emerge. Lines could blur between consent and the right to be forgotten in smart cities where devices track movement or in retail spaces or intelligent public displays where advertisements are delivered to consumers.User interactions with devices may be transient as they walk past, so data management needs to reflect this, Urquhart says. Implementing the right to be forgotten could be one challenge, but a bigger one is the legal basis for collecting data in the first place.Explicit consent is needed when more sens itive data like biometrics or health information is collected. Redesigning consent mechanisms for public space IoT may involve finding creative ways to use affordances of smart technologies to communicate with users example, gesture recognition or even using icons, as GDPR suggests, Urquhart says.7) Data PortabilityA lot of personal data is stored in the cloud, but users have limited access to it. GDPR has fangs for users to have more control over that data. An interesting design challenge in GDPR is related to implementing the right to data portability for IoT.Under GDPR, users have a right to receive their data from a data controller in a structured, commonly used, interoperable, machine readable format much like how Facebook provides an archive of personal data to users for transmission to another controller. Users can decide how the other controller uses the data.In response, personal information management systems can help, as users decide who can access data, why, and fo r how long, Urquhart says. New edge computing architectures are emerging where privacy engineers prioritise usability and user rights. One project called Databox brings analysis to the local data, as opposed to centralizing it in the cloud. It welches built with GDPR compliance in mind, and addresses concerns like accountability of data processing to users and reducing the need for international data transfer.8) Think Beyond BordersThe GDPR regulation doesnt apply to countries outside the EU. But if a U.S. company wants to engage EU customers, they need to think carefully about capturing personal data and device design. Companies like Siemens and Starfish Medical have policies in place to apply GDPR on a worldwide basis. Customizing specialized devices for individual markets can be an expensive proposition.9) Train Employees in GDPREvery employee needs to be aware of how to handle personal data and the policies and procedures to ensure compliance with GDPRs accountability principle.A n organizations employees are really the key to ensuring ongoing compliance, so their training and engagement is of paramount importance, the lawyers at Womble Bond Dickinson say.10) Pathway for New TechnologiesGDPR could pave a path for implementation of new technologies like Blockchain so that users get a full view how their data is being used. This can be tied into other Blockchain-driven systems implemented by companies like Syncfab that are putting idle factories to work.Read MoreEngineers Break Down Borders3D Printing a Future of New Metal ActuatorsHow Industry 4.0 Impacts Engineering Design For Further DiscussionUser interactions with devices may be transient as they walk past, so data management needs to reflect this. 3 Ways Recruiters Can Provide Value to Candidates - Spark Hire

3 Ways Recruiters Can Provide Value to Candidates - Spark HireIn recruiting, it is not only important to provide value to your clients, but to also provide value to candidates. You will have a difficult time attracting top talent to work with you if what you offer isnt much. There are three ways that you can stand out among many other recruiters and provide value to your candidates1. Access to the hidden job marketAs a recruiter, it is important that you have more opportunities to sell than only what is on the job boards. When you have access to opportunities before your client has advertised, you are able to provide your candidate valuable access to the hidden job market. When a candidate is able to get in front of a hiring manager before anyone else, you have given that candidate an opportunity to land the job with little to no outside competition.2. Expert resume tipsWhile top talent can sweep a hiring manager off his feet during the interview, it is important to set that candidate up for success when it comes to first impressions. The best way for a candidate to make a great first impression with a hiring manager is to first have a stellar resume. There are so many skilled candidates out there who simply do not have a clue when it comes to resume formatting and presentation. As an expert recruiter, you know what will capture your clients interest. Use this knowledge to help top talent better portray key skills and experiences on a resume.3. Expert interview guidanceA good recruiter understands what the hiring manager is looking for in an interview. She will know the hiring managers interview style, the company culture, and what a candidate should expect upon entering the interview room. Before your candidate ever interviews with your client (via phone or in-person), be sure to prepare the candidate ahead of time. Reviewing the job description again and discussing the key job responsibilities versus the candidates experience is a great place to start in intervie w preparation. In addition, it is smart to give the candidate a run-down of the hiring manager and his background. I always like to direct my candidates to the hiring managers professional LinkedIn profile. This allows the candidate to get a good feel for the hiring managers background and where he came from.Providing valuable information to your candidates such as the hiring managers interview style and types of questions that may be asked during the interview are all tips that will help your candidate be as prepared as possible.Typically, I also discuss what would be expected from the candidate during the interview. Recommending types of questions to ask at the end of the interview and ensuring that the candidate understands that closing the deal is important are ways that I provide excellent value to a candidate. How do you provide value to your candidates? Please share your tips in the comments below.Image michaeljung/BigStock.com
